Preparing you for success

A hiring process for you to be you

Here at ST, there really are endless opportunities for everyone and we’re routing for you to land a job with us.

That’s why we focus on providing a fair hiring process that supports everyone to be themselves to give you the best opportunity to bag a job you’ll love.

Three simple steps to join our family

I can't find an open role that's right for me, what do I do?

If you can’t find a role for you right now, that’s not to worry. You can either keeping checking back on our job board where we have new opportunities added every day or why not Join our Talent Community to be kept up to date with our latest jobs.

How long does the recruitment process take?

This usually depends on the role and business area, but on average we work towards a 4 week timeline from the role opening and being advertised to the successful candidate being offered the position.

How is your recruitment team set up?

Our recruitment team is structured into three different areas: our core recruiting team which pick up the bulk of our roles, our early careers team which looks after our apprentices, graduates and undergraduate students and also our executive resourcing team, who look after our senior hires.

What do I need to apply for a role?

You’ll just need to attach your CV – you can also add a cover letter if you feel like you’d like to let us know something additional, but we won’t judge you either way! If you need support with your CV, we’d love you to join one of our upcoming sessions with our Academy team where they’ll give you all the guidance you need.

I don't have a CV, where should I start?

We understand that you may have been in a job for a while and not needed to update your CV or simply you haven’t applied for a role where you’ve needed a CV before. Our Academy team can help you with writing your CV through one of their CV writing virtual workshops

Where can I park when I have my interview?

For interviews at our head office, there are many car parks you can use across the city centre. For interviews at one of our other sites, there is usually parking available on site, so please check with your hiring manager.

What should I wear to my interview?

It’s totally up to you – we want you to feel as comfortable as possible, so please don’t feel you need to be suited and booted, smart casual is totally fine.

Will my interview be face-to-face or virtual?

This is usually dependent on the role and where you’ll be based, but if you have a preference, please speak to your recruiter when arranging the interview and let them know what you’d prefer. We just want to get the very best from you – so if that means coming into the office or having a virtual conversation we’ll try and accommodate it.

How do I request reasonable adjustments?

During the application process you’ll be asked if we need to make any reasonable adjustments and where you can let us know. If we then invite you for an interview your recruiter will ask you what adjustments you’d like us to put in place and arrange these prior to your interview. If you’re not comfortable mentioning this on your application, just tell your recruiter when you speak with them and we’ll make sure these requests are met.

I haven’t had an interview for a while, where can I get help and support?

We totally understand some candidates may be well-versed for interviews, but others may not have had one in a while and feel like they need to swat up, which is totally fine.

If you’re successful after your application you’ll be invited for an interview and your recruiter will be able to give you lots of guidance about the team, the role and the interview. However, if you think you’d benefit from a coaching session in general for your interview technique, our Academy provides external training to our communities on interviews and CVs.

I work all day. Are you flexible for interview times?

We know that everyone has busy lives and that sometimes it’s difficult to take time out for an interview, so we’ll try and do everything we can do make sure you get a time that works for you.

Can I view sample interview questions?

Yes, you can! Our interviews are competency based and themed around our core values – Care, Curiosity, Courage and Pride. Here’s a flavour of what you could be asked…

  • Can you give an example of when you have had to adapt a solution to fit the needs of a customer?
  • Give an example of when you had difficulty of persuading someone to your point of view.
  • Give me an example of a time when you have identified and fixed a problem without being asked to do so.
  • Can you give us about a time when someone has given you some negative feedback and what you did about it?
  • What work related achievement are you most proud of and why?
  • Give an example of where you had to motivate a group of people to achieve an important outcome
  • Tell us about a time you encountered resistance or a setback on a something you were working on, but managed to work through it anyway.
  • Give an example of when you have improved performance within your business area?

Will I get to speak to anyone before my interview?

Yes, every role has a dedicated recruiter who will speak with you before the interview and take you through what to expect. If you’ve got any questions, they’ll be able to help answer them and put you at ease.

Is Severn Trent an inclusive place to work?
